Guiseppe Arcimboldo

(4th grade)

In this lesson, students were introduced to artists Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Klaus Enrique, and Philip Haas, all of whom created work centered around the use of food to create portraits of people. We discussed the creative process and techniques, focusing specifically on overlapping to imply depth. Students then created their own Arcimboldo-inspired portraits using food to depict facial features.

The goal of this lesson was to have students interact with one another at their tables and think about their compositions in terms of the use of space and color during their creative process.
